Two South Bay BART extension projects are coming to fruition — one in its final stages, and the other two years in the making. The long anticipated BART to Warm Springs extension is set to begin service by 2015, and the completed subway tunnel and newly trenched underpass suggest as much. MTC funded one third of the project, which will carry passengers 5.4 miles toward the South Bay from the Fremont station.
In the spring of 2012, crews began building an additional 10 miles of BART tracks beyond the Warm Springs station. Eventually, they system will carry passengers to North San Jose, with new stations in Milpitas and Berryessa. Construction is underway at both stations, and on 11 underpasses and bridges. The trains will travel along the former Union Pacific Railroad route. MTC has been a key advocate in securing federal funds for BART to Silicon Valley, which will be managed by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.
Photographer Noah Berger checked out the progress on BART to the South Bay, capturing dramatic shots of the crews laying the tracks, building the aerial structures and doing excavation work at the station sites.
