September is Bay Area's Transit Month

September marks the Bay Area’s 11th annual Transit Month.

There are many opportunities to celebrate the public transportation that keeps the Bay Area moving. Hosted by San Francisco Transit Riders and Seamless Bay Area with support from MTC and local transit agencies, Transit Month toasts the many trains, buses, and ferries that connect the region and uplift its communities, economies, and cultures.   

The month is hallmarked by dozens of free events hosted by agencies, organizations, and transit fans. Among the festivities: 

Photo Exhibit: Community in Transit

  • Opening event: Tuesday, Sept. 8
  • Time: 5-7 p.m.
  • Description: Celebrate Bay Area transit through a unique photography exhibition that
    highlights the infrastructure linking the region and the community riders find on, and
    because of, transit. Hosted by MTC, 375 Beale St., San Francisco

Transit GM/CEO Ride-along

  • Date: Friday, Sept. 11
  • Time: Starting around 3 p.m. (time TBD)
  • Description: In celebration of Transit Month 2026, Bay Area transit agencies and MTC are hosting “All Aboard with Transit CEOs,” a ride-along giving the public a chance to ride with and meet regional transit leaders. The ride-along will start in Oakland around 3 p.m. with rides on AC Transit, BART, SF Muni, and Caltrain.

 All Aboard Bay Area Transit Day 

  • Date: Tuesday, Sept. 15
  • Time: All day
  • Description: All Aboard Transit Day, when transit agencies encourage people to hop onboard their systems to experience their recent service and customer experience improvements. Some agencies will give out swag to riders.

Transit Month is a great opportunity to explore the places transit can take Bay Area residents and to connect with local agencies and riders.
