Planners Look at the Promise and Pitfalls of Self-Driving Cars
Autonomous vehicles are set to be one of the greatest disrupters to transportation in our lifetime. What impact might they have on the Bay Area? MTC and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) are exploring the answers through the Horizon initiative, which poses challenging questions that traditionally have been left outside the regional planning process.
As part of the initiative, MTC and ABAG are developing a series of analyses called Perspective Papers throughout 2018 and 2019, with the first paper covering autonomous vehicles, also referred to as driverless cars.
MTC/ABAG released the paper at the inaugural “Expand Your Horizon: Talks on the Future of the Bay Area” event on June 26, 2018. Panelists discussed the impact that autonomous vehicles may have on the Bay Area’s transportation system and land use patterns, and presented policy recommendations for safely integrating autonomous vehicles into the transportation mix.
