Long-Range Planning
Plan Bay Area 2050+ is the long-range plan created by MTC and the Association of Bay Area Governments that outlines a roadmap for the Bay Area's future.
The nine counties that make up the Bay Area are continuously growing and changing. Every four years, MTC and the Association of Bay Area Governments develop a long-range plan — Plan Bay Area — that charts the course for the region.
It makes recommendations about how cities and counties should plan for the Bay Area’s future, especially for regional projects like transportation and housing.
MTC provides funding for major regional projects. Cities and counties use Plan Bay Area to help make important decisions about how to invest that money.
Plan Bay Area 2050+ is the current, long-range regional plan. It charts a course for a Bay Area that is affordable, connected, diverse, healthy and vibrant for all residents through 2050 and beyond.
Plan Bay Area 2050, adopted in 2021, is the first post-pandemic approved long-range Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
Plan Bay Area 2040, adopted in 2017, builds on earlier work to develop an efficient transportation network, provide more housing choices and grow the region in a financially and environmentally responsible way.
By identifying which Bay Area communities are or have historically been underserved, MTC can direct funding toward projects that enable more equitable access to transportation, housing and services.
Some counties develop their own long-range plans — countywide transportation plans — to guide transportation decisions in their communities. MTC assists them with cross-regional coordination.
