MTC Staff and Commissioners Celebrate Bike to Work Day
MTC Commissioners were out in force for Bike to Work Day 2018, using pedal power to get to work or helping cheer on bicyclists at some of the 400 “Energizer Stations” located throughout the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. MTC Executive Director Steve Heminger joined the commissioners, pedaling on a Ford GoBike to MTC headquarters in San Francisco.
MTC Chair and Rohnert Park Mayor Jake Mackenzie biked to an economic briefing in Rohnert Park in the morning, then continued to his office. Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, MTC’s vice-chair, pedaled at the Dublin/Pleasanton BART Energizer Station. Marin County Supervisor and MTC Commissioner Damon Connolly started his day early at 5:30 AM at the Golden Gate Bridge, participating in a media event and then pedaling north to Civic Center, stopping at Energizer Stations along the way.
In San Francisco, Supervisor and MTC Commissioner Jane Kim, plus BART Director and MTC Commissioner Nick Josefowitz, biked with constituents to a rally at City Hall. In San Jose, San Jose Mayor and MTC Commissioner Sam Liccardo pedaled to a downtown rally. In Oakland, Oakland Mayor and MTC Commissioner Libby Schaaf joined a pedal pool that biked to a rally and breakfast at City Hall. Solano County Supervisor and MTC Commissioner Jim Spering took a ride to the Suisun City Energizer Station at the Amtrak station.
MTC commissioners were among the thousands volunteering at energizer stations around the region, greeting riders and handing out refreshments, and helping turn a normal Thursday morning commute into a celebration on two wheels. Los Altos City Councilmember and MTC Commissioner Jeannie Bruins was at the Los Altos Energizer Station, while Union City Mayor and MTC Commissioner Carol Dutra-Vernaci participated at Union City BART. Clayton Councilmember and MTC Commissioner Julie Pierce was at the Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa BART station and Orinda Mayor and MTC Commissioner Amy Worth was at the Orinda BART station.
Presented by MTC, 511 and Kaiser Permanente, Bike to Work Day encourages local residents to try commuting by pedal power for the first time and celebrates those who bike to work regularly.
